Know Who to Know in Juneau
15 October 2006, by Brittany Retherford, Journalist for the Juneau Empire“Networking is the essential part of marketing in Juneau, specifically because word of mouth is so important,” said Jeremy Hansen, co-owner of the information technology firm Hansen Gress.
Nearly all the company’s business comes through references, he said.
“Who you know in the business community is priceless,” said Hansen’s partner, Tyler Gress.
Hansen said it is sometimes difficult for young people in Juneau to understand the importance of networking in finding jobs because they want to be hired on the basis of their good ethics and strong academic or work background.

Making the Connection

Jeremy Hansen, CEO of the Juneau information technology company Hansen Gress, has worked with the KIN to develop a Web site and also has attended Pub Night.“The people at KIN are great people to work with. Every time we see them they come packed with enthusiasm. They always bring an energy and a new approach to things that have been done before in a traditional way,” [...].
“They’re inspired to do something to greatly enhance the quality of the entrepreneur experience in Alaska. That’s very inline with my business goals of helping businesses achieve goals.”
[...] “It really fosters an environment for quality social networking,” Hansen said.
“I meet people that I’ve met before again. When you attend lots of social events the goal is to communicate, and it builds the quality of the relationship.”
Hopefuls weigh in on city housing
15 September 2006, by Eric Morrison, Journalist for the Juneau EmpireAffordable housing is a contributing factor to the loss of young professionals in the community but other issues need to be taken into account as well, Hansen Gress Chief Executive Officer Jeremy Hansen said. The issue needs to be explored more in-depth by local leaders, said the 23-year-old founder of an information technology firm.
“I think I’d like to see the issue go beyond affordable housing,” Hansen said. “I think affordable housing is important, although I think there are several other factors, both economic infrastructure and communitywide issues that are vital.”
Money is not always the motivating factor when young professionals decide to leave or stay in Juneau, he said.
“I’d like people to look beyond the economic indicators and look for some other creative solutions and really spend some time on why businesses are having a hard time affording the youth,” he said.

For Jeremy Hansen, graduating from high school wasn’t so exciting because he expects it will be just a step in his education. He hopes to get a doctorate in computer science or engineering.
“I like learning. I’m kind of sad school is out because I like continuing my education process,” he said.
